They Are Here, a Short Story (en inglés)

It was three o’clock in the morning when the phone rang. A woman’s voice came through the other side of the line: “You need to wake up. You must leave your apartment… quickly!” It was an unknown voice. The woman was maybe crying or trembling when she talked. Then she said: “They are here”. And she cut the call.

At the beginning I thought it was a nightmare. So I decided to put my head on the pillow and go back to sleep. I had had a particularly busy day, and I was really tired. I closed my eyes all the while thinking of the woman’s voice, trying to figure out if it were a kind of joke that some people played – specially at three o’clock in the morning.

But then the phone rang again. “It couldn’t be”, I said. “I told you you needed to leave your apartment right now”, said the woman, this time obviously upset.

Then I realized that I knew that voice from somewhere. It had a familiar ring to it.

“Yes, you know who I am”. The woman guessed my thoughts. “They are here, the aliens. Now, go and never return again. Your house is now ours and your life as well”.

I tried to open my eyes but I could never stop that dream.
